God Changes the Heart Before the Habits
Daily Devotion by Shane - July 7, 2026

Series Theme
Everyone wants to change something. We want to overcome bad habits, grow spiritually, restore relationships, and become the person God created us to be. Yet many discover that determination alone isn't enough. The good news of the gospel is that lasting transformation doesn't come from stronger willpower—it comes from surrendering to God's power. This series explores how Christ changes us from the inside out, enabling us to live the life He has called us to live.
God Changes the Heart Before the Habits
Scripture
"A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you..." — Ezekiel 36:26
It's easy to focus on outward behavior. We want to stop saying certain words, break unhealthy habits, or develop better routines. While those changes matter, God is always after something deeper.
He wants your heart.
Behavior is often the fruit of what is happening beneath the surface. Anger flows from unresolved bitterness. Pride grows from insecurity. Worry often reveals misplaced trust.
Jesus taught that what comes out of a person begins in the heart.
That's why lasting transformation starts internally before it becomes visible externally.
God doesn't merely remove bad habits; He replaces old desires with new ones.
As you spend time with Him, you'll discover that the things you once loved begin to lose their appeal while the things of God become increasingly precious.
This process takes time.
Sanctification isn't instantaneous perfection; it's lifelong transformation.
Don't become discouraged if growth feels slow.
Every step of obedience is evidence that God is still working.
The God who gave you a new heart continues shaping it every day.
Prayer
Lord, search my heart and reveal anything that keeps me from becoming more like Christ. Replace selfish desires with a hunger for righteousness and help my outward life reflect the work You're doing within me. Amen.
Reflection Questions
Which outward struggle may actually point to a deeper heart issue?
What new desires has God been developing in my life recently?
