When Doubt and Faith Exist in the Same Heart
Scripture: Mark 9:24
“Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”
Few statements in Scripture describe the struggle of faith more honestly than these words.
“Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”
The father who spoke them desperately wanted Jesus to help his son. He believed enough to come to Christ, yet he recognized that doubt was still fighting within him.
Perhaps you understand that tension.
You believe God—but you still have questions.
You trust God—but part of you is afraid.
You know Scripture—but your emotions are struggling to catch up with what your mind knows to be true.
What should you do?
Do what this father did.
Bring your doubt to Jesus.
Do not run away from God because you are struggling to trust Him. Run toward Him.
You can pray honestly:
“Lord, I know You are good, but I am struggling.”
“Lord, I know You are faithful, but I am afraid.”
“Lord, I believe Your Word, but help me with the questions I cannot answer.”
God already knows the struggle inside your heart. You gain nothing by pretending it is not there.
Faith is not the absence of every question. Faith is choosing where you will take those questions.
Take them to Scripture.
Take them to prayer.
Take them to Christ.
The man in Mark 9 did not possess perfect faith, but he brought the faith he had to the perfect Savior.
That is enough.
You do not need enormous faith in a small God.
You need sincere faith in an almighty God.
When doubt appears, do not feed it with fear. Feed your faith with God's Word.
Reflection Question:
Have my doubts caused me to withdraw from God when they should have caused me to seek Him more deeply?
Daily Takeaway:
When faith and doubt are fighting within you, bring both to Jesus and ask Him to strengthen what you believe.
