Facing the Giant
Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:1-11
The valley of Elah was filled with fear. The Philistine army stood on one side, Israel on the other, and between them came a giant named Goliath. Every day he mocked God’s people and challenged them to fight. The Bible says that when Saul and Israel heard his words, they were “dismayed, and greatly afraid.”
Fear has a way of magnifying the enemy. Problems grow larger in our minds when we stare at them too long. Goliath was over nine feet tall, armed for battle, experienced in warfare, and intimidating in appearance. Israel looked at the giant and saw impossibility. Yet they forgot that God had already delivered them many times before.
Many believers live in that same valley today. The giant may not be a Philistine warrior, but it may be anxiety, temptation, discouragement, bitterness, financial pressure, family conflict, or spiritual exhaustion. The enemy loves to stand in the middle of our lives and shout lies into our hearts. Satan wants God’s people to become paralyzed by fear instead of empowered by faith.
The tragedy of this passage is not merely that Goliath was large—it was that no one trusted God enough to move forward. Fear caused soldiers to retreat when faith should have caused them to advance.
Sometimes God allows giants in our lives so we will learn that victory never comes through human strength alone. Giants remind us of our weakness, but they also remind us of God’s power. The same God who delivered Israel from Egypt was still on the throne in the valley of Elah.
You may feel overwhelmed today, but remember this truth: giants may be loud, but God is greater. Fear may speak, but faith must answer.
The enemy’s intimidation does not cancel God’s promises.
Do not let the size of your battle cause you to forget the greatness of your God.
Reflection Questions
What “giant” is trying to intimidate you right now?
Are you responding to your struggles with fear or with faith in God?
Prayer
Lord, help me not to be controlled by fear. Remind me that no giant is greater than You. Strengthen my faith when I feel weak, and help me trust You in every battle I face. In Jesus’ name, amen.
