Loving Not the World

Scripture
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world…” — 1 John 2:15a (KJV)

Devotion
The world offers temporary pleasures, empty promises, and passing treasures. Satan uses the attractions of the world to distract believers from wholehearted devotion to God. John warns us clearly: “Love not the world.”

This does not mean we hate people or isolate ourselves completely from society. Rather, it means we refuse to embrace the sinful values and priorities of a system that opposes God. The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life continually compete for our affection.

One of the greatest dangers of living in a hostile world is becoming too attached to it. When our hearts become consumed with possessions, recognition, pleasure, or success, our love for God grows cold. The things of this world are temporary and fading away, but the will of God endures forever.

A believer must constantly examine where his affections truly lie. The more we love Christ, the less attractive the world becomes.

Reflection Questions
What worldly distractions most compete for your affection toward God?
Are your priorities more eternal or temporary?
How can you cultivate a deeper love for Christ this week?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, guard my heart from loving the things of this world more than I love You. Help me to live with eternal priorities and to seek first Your kingdom. May my life reflect a genuine devotion to Christ in the middle of a hostile world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
