The Risen Shepherd

Scripture: “Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant.” — Hebrews 13:20

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is not only proof of His victory over death—it is confirmation that our Shepherd lives and still leads His flock. When Hebrews calls Him the “great shepherd of the sheep,” it reminds us that the One who laid down His life for the flock also rose again to guide, guard, and gather His people.

In ancient times a shepherd was responsible for every aspect of the flock’s welfare. He led them to safe pastures, protected them from predators, and sought them when they wandered. Jesus fulfills that picture perfectly. In John 10:11 He declared, “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” But the story did not end at the cross. The Shepherd who died for the sheep rose again to continue caring for them.

Because Christ is the risen Shepherd, believers are never abandoned. The empty tomb guarantees His continual presence. He walks with us through valleys, guides us through uncertainty, and gathers us when we stray. The resurrection assures us that the Shepherd who overcame death has the power to sustain us in every circumstance of life.

This truth brings profound comfort. Many people feel lost, alone, or uncertain about the path ahead. Yet the risen Christ promises leadership for those who follow Him. He speaks through His Word, directs through His Spirit, and gently calls His sheep by name. His leadership is not harsh or distant—it is personal and compassionate.

The resurrection also assures us that our Shepherd’s care is eternal. Hebrews reminds us that His work is secured through “the blood of the everlasting covenant.” His sacrifice established a relationship that cannot be broken. Because He lives, His guidance never ceases. Because He rose, His protection never fails.

Following the Shepherd requires listening for His voice. In a world filled with competing influences and distractions, believers must intentionally tune their hearts to the voice of Christ. We hear Him through Scripture, prayer, and faithful obedience. When we follow His voice, we discover that His paths lead to life, peace, and spiritual nourishment.

Trusting His leading is sometimes difficult because we cannot always see the full path ahead. Sheep often follow a shepherd without knowing where the next pasture lies. In the same way, Christ calls us to trust His wisdom even when we do not understand His direction. The risen Shepherd sees the entire journey and faithfully leads His flock step by step.

Ultimately, the resurrection assures us that our Shepherd will bring us safely home. The One who conquered the grave will one day gather His flock into eternal pasture. Until that day, His presence walks beside us and His voice continues to guide us.
Because He lives, we are never alone. Because He rose, we are never abandoned. The Shepherd who stepped out of the tomb still leads His sheep today.

Reflection Questions:
• Are you listening carefully for the Shepherd’s voice in His Word?
• Is there an area of your life where you need to trust His leading more fully?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, my Shepherd, thank You for conquering death and continuing to lead Your flock. Help me hear Your voice clearly and follow wherever You guide. Strengthen my trust in Your leadership and remind me that I am never alone under Your care. Amen.
