Called by Name
Scripture:
“Jesus saith unto her, Mary.” — John 20:16
In the quiet of the garden, through tears of confusion and grief, Mary Magdalene stood face to face with the risen Savior—and did not recognize Him. Her eyes were clouded by sorrow, her heart weighed down by loss. She assumed He was the gardener. But everything changed in a single moment when Jesus spoke one word: “Mary.”
It was not a sermon. It was not a miracle. It was not a display of power. It was a personal call.
The Good Shepherd still calls His sheep by name. He does not deal with us as a distant crowd but as deeply known individuals. He knows your struggles, your fears, your past, and your potential. He knows the sound of your cry and the weight of your burdens. And just as He spoke into Mary’s grief, He speaks into your life today.
There is something unmistakable about His voice. When He calls, confusion gives way to clarity, sorrow gives way to joy, and distance gives way to devotion. Mary went from weeping to worship in a moment because she heard His voice personally.
Many today know about Jesus, but far fewer truly know Him. Religion can inform you, but only relationship can transform you. The question is not whether He is speaking—it is whether you are listening.
He calls you not just to salvation, but to closeness. Not just to belief, but to fellowship. Not just to follow at a distance, but to walk with Him daily.
And when He calls your name, the only fitting response is the same as Mary’s: “Rabboni”—Master.
Reflection Questions:
Do you recognize His voice above all the noise in your life?
When was the last time you sensed Him speaking personally to you?
Is your relationship with Christ intimate, or merely informational?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for knowing me personally and calling me by name. Help me to quiet my heart so I can hear Your voice clearly. Draw me into a deeper, closer walk with You—not just knowing about You, but truly knowing You. When You call, help me to respond with love, obedience, and surrender. Call me closer, Lord. Amen.
