Day 2: Beyond the Checklist
Scripture Reading: Luke 10:38–42
"And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her." — Luke 10:41–42
Martha had a list. Jesus was in her home, and there was food to prepare, a table to set, and guests to serve. None of it was wrong. In fact, it was good, generous work. But somewhere between the kitchen and the doorway, the tasks became heavier than the Guest.
Meanwhile, her sister Mary sat at Jesus' feet and listened. Frustrated, Martha asked Jesus to send Mary back to work. His answer was gentle but clear: you are anxious about many things, but only one thing is needed.
It is possible to live a busy Christian life and still miss Christ. We can attend every service, read the daily chapter, and serve on every committee, yet feel empty inside. Jesus warned of people who "draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me" (Matthew 15:8). The boxes get checked, but the heart stays untouched.
The better way is not to throw away the list. Martha's service mattered. The better way is to put first things first — to sit with Jesus before we run for Him. When time with Him becomes the source of our service rather than another item on the list, the work changes. It flows from love instead of pressure.
Mary "chose" that good part. It was a decision. Every day, we face the same choice.
Life Application Take-Away
Choose the one thing before the many things. Before you open your phone or start your to-do list tomorrow, spend ten unhurried minutes "at His feet" — read a short passage slowly, then sit quietly and talk with Him about it. Don't measure it by how much you read, but by whether you met with Him.
Reflect: Which of my spiritual habits have become boxes to check instead of moments with Jesus?
Prayer: Father, I confess that I am often careful and troubled about many things. Teach me to choose the good part. Draw my heart near to You, not just my lips and hands. Let everything I do for You flow from time spent with You. Amen.
