Your Decisions Begin in Your Heart
Scripture:
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” — Proverbs 4:23
We often think our biggest problem is making bad decisions. Scripture takes us deeper. The decision is usually the final step in a process that began in the heart.
Think about the last time you said something you regretted. The words may have come out in seconds, but perhaps frustration had been building for hours—or even days. The same is true with spending, eating, relationships, temptation, and countless other areas of life.
Jesus taught that what comes out of us reveals what is already within us. Our actions are often symptoms of something deeper.
That means lasting change cannot simply focus on behavior. We need God to work on our hearts.
Instead of only praying, “Lord, help me make better decisions,” we can pray, “Lord, change the desires that are producing these decisions.”
God isn't interested only in making us behave better. He is transforming us into the likeness of Christ.
Pay attention today to what is happening inside you. What are you dwelling on? What are you desiring? What frustrations are you carrying? What attitudes are quietly growing?
Guarding your heart today can change the decisions you make tomorrow.
Life Application Takeaway: Before trying to change your next decision, ask God to reveal what needs to change in your heart.
