Wisdom for the Asking!

Scripture:

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” — James 1:5

Devotion:

Life is filled with decisions—some small, some life-changing. Often we find ourselves unsure of what to do, which path to take, or how to respond in a difficult situation. James offers us a simple yet profound invitation: if you lack wisdom, ask God.

First, the verse acknowledges our need. We all lack wisdom at times. Human reasoning, experiences, and even advice from others can only take us so far. True wisdom—the kind that discerns God’s will and applies it rightly—comes from Him alone.

Second, the verse assures us of God’s generosity. James reminds us that God “giveth to all men liberally.” He is not stingy with His guidance. He delights in pouring wisdom into the hearts of those who humbly seek it. Unlike people who grow tired of our questions, God never rebukes us for asking. He does not scold us for needing help; instead, He welcomes our dependence on Him.

Third, the verse affirms God’s promise. James writes with certainty: “and it shall be given him.” When we ask in faith, God responds. The answer may come through His Word, the leading of the Holy Spirit, or godly counsel, but we can rest assured that He will guide us in His perfect way.

Today, if you find yourself at a crossroads, don’t rely on your own understanding. Bring your questions, confusion, and concerns before the Lord. He is ready and willing to supply the wisdom you need to walk in His will.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the promise of Your Word that if I lack wisdom, I can come to You in faith. Forgive me for the times I have leaned on my own understanding instead of seeking Your guidance. Teach me to ask, to wait, and to trust in the wisdom You so generously provide. May my steps be directed by Your Spirit, and may my life reflect Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
