Scripture:

“For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.”
(2 Corinthians 4:5 KJV)

Devotion:

In a world filled with voices vying for attention, how do we discern truth from error? Paul gives us a powerful key in this verse: the true message of God always points to Christ, not to self.

False teachers and deceptive messages often have one thing in common—they subtly (or boldly) shift the spotlight away from Jesus and onto human personalities, performances, or personal gain. But Paul says plainly, “We preach not ourselves.” The gospel is not a platform for self-promotion; it is the declaration of Christ Jesus as Lord.

This truth helps us develop spiritual discernment. If a message elevates man over the Master, it is to be questioned. If it draws attention to charisma but lacks a Christ-centered focus, we must be cautious. Authentic preaching—and Christian living—will always seek to magnify Jesus, not manipulate others.

Paul also calls himself a servant for Jesus’ sake. A faithful servant of God serves not to be seen but to lead others to the Savior. The test of truth is not only doctrinal soundness but gospel-centered humility.

As believers, we must keep our focus on Christ. He is the message, the model, and the motive. When Jesus is at the center, the truth remains clear.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus,  Help me to be discerning in a world of noise and confusion. Teach me to recognize truth by keeping my eyes on You. Guard my heart against the pride of self and the deception of man-centered messages. May I always seek to lift up Your name and never my own. Let my life and my words reflect that You alone are Lord.  In Your holy name I pray, Amen.
