The Firstfruits

Scripture: “But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.” — 1 Corinthians 15:20 (KJV)

In the Old Testament, the firstfruits were the first portion of the harvest offered to God. They represented both gratitude for what had been given and confidence that more was still coming. The first sheaf of grain presented before the Lord was a promise that the full harvest would soon follow.

When Paul calls Christ the “firstfruits” of those who have fallen asleep, he is declaring something powerful. Jesus was not merely raised from the dead as a one-time miracle—His resurrection is the guarantee of a greater resurrection yet to come. Just as the firstfruits assured the harvest, Christ’s victory over the grave assures that all who belong to Him will also rise.

Death often feels like the final word in this broken world. It brings grief, separation, and sorrow. Yet the resurrection of Christ changed everything. The tomb could not hold Him, and because it could not hold Him, it will not hold His people either. His resurrection broke the power of death and opened the door to eternal life.

For the believer, death is not a dead end—it is a doorway. The grave is not a prison but a passage. Because Christ rose, we have a living hope that stretches beyond the boundaries of this life. The same Savior who walked out of the tomb will one day call His people out of theirs.

This truth reshapes how we live today. If our future is secure in Christ, we can face life’s trials with courage and confidence. We can endure suffering knowing it is temporary. We can serve faithfully knowing our labor is not in vain. And we can face even death itself without fear, because the resurrection has already secured the final victory.

The empty tomb reminds us that hope is not wishful thinking—it is a certainty grounded in the risen Christ. The firstfruits have already been gathered, and the harvest is coming.

Reflection Questions
How does the promise of resurrection shape the way you live today?
Do you live with confidence in eternal life, or does fear of death still trouble your heart?
How can the hope of Christ’s resurrection encourage you in present trials?

Prayer
Lord, thank You that Jesus rose from the grave and became the firstfruits of all who trust in Him. Because He lives, we have the promise of eternal life. Help me live each day with the confidence that death is not the end, but the beginning of everlasting life with You. Strengthen my faith and fill my heart with hope. Amen.
