Saved by Grace, Not by Works

“Saved by Grace, Not by Works”
Scripture:
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” — Ephesians 2:8–9
Devotion:
These verses are a cornerstone of the Gospel message. They remind us that salvation is not something we can earn, achieve, or deserve. It is entirely the work of God’s grace, received by faith.
First, Paul says, “By grace are ye saved.” Grace is God’s unmerited favor—His kindness extended to us even though we were sinners. Romans 5:8 says, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Our salvation begins not with our goodness, but with God’s love.
Second, Paul emphasizes, “through faith.” Faith is the hand that receives God’s gift. It is trusting completely in what Christ has done on the cross. Faith is not about our effort, but about our dependence—leaning fully on Jesus’ finished work.
Third, Paul makes it clear: “not of yourselves … not of works.” This means we cannot boast in our own righteousness. We cannot earn God’s approval through religion, good deeds, or moral behavior. Isaiah 64:6 tells us that “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.” Salvation is not a reward for our performance, but a gift from God.
Finally, Paul concludes: “It is the gift of God.” Gifts are not earned; they are given. Our role is to receive. And when we receive Christ, we receive eternal life, forgiveness, and peace with God.
This truth should both humble us and give us hope. We are humbled because we bring nothing to the table. We are hopeful because our salvation is secure in Christ and not dependent on our weak efforts. Today, rest in this assurance: you are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
Prayer:
Gracious Lord, thank You for the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. I know I cannot earn Your love or deserve Your mercy, yet You freely gave it through Your grace. Strengthen my faith to trust fully in Christ’s finished work on the cross. Keep me humble, remembering that it is not of works but only by Your grace that I stand saved today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
