Ask, Seek, Knock—The Door Will Open”
Scripture:
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” — Matthew 7:7
Devotion:
Prayer is one of the greatest privileges God has given His children. In this verse, Jesus outlines three profound yet straightforward actions—ask, seek, and knock. These are not empty words, but promises backed by the character of a faithful God.
First, He says, “Ask.” To ask is to come humbly before the Father, acknowledging that we cannot do life on our own. Asking is not demanding; it is expressing dependence on Him. James 4:2 reminds us, “Ye have not, because ye ask not.” God invites us to bring our needs, worries, and desires before Him, trusting that He hears and answers them according to His will.
Second, He says “Seek.” Seeking goes beyond asking—it involves pursuit. To seek is to diligently go after the things of God, placing Him as our highest priority. Jesus said in Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Seeking is not a passive act; it is an active faith that moves us closer to God.
Third, He says, “Knock.” Knocking implies persistence. A closed door may discourage us, but Jesus assures us that if we keep knocking in faith, the door will be opened. This is not about forcing our will upon God, but about demonstrating perseverance in prayer and trusting in His timing.
Together, these three commands—ask, seek, and knock—form a picture of continual faith and reliance on God. He delights in answering His children. Sometimes the answer is immediate, delayed, and sometimes different from what we expect, but always according to His wisdom and love.
Today, whatever you are facing, take Jesus at His word. Don’t hesitate to ask. Don’t stop seeking. Don’t grow weary in knocking. God promises that He hears and responds, and the door He opens will always lead to His best for you.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise that when I ask, You hear me; when I seek, I find; and when I knock, You open the door. Teach me to pray with faith, to seek You with all my heart, and to persevere when the answers seem delayed. Help me to trust in Your perfect will and timing, knowing that every good gift comes from Your hand. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
