Faith That Doesn’t Stagger
Scripture Reading: Romans 4:16–22; Matthew 14:22–33
Key Verse: “He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.” — Romans 4:20–21
Faith that pleases God doesn’t just sit and believe. It acts. Abraham was about a hundred years old and Sarah was well past the age of having children, yet God promised them a son. Abraham looked honestly at the impossible facts and still chose to trust the God who made the promise. He was “fully persuaded” that God could do what He said.
Peter had a similar moment on a stormy night. When Jesus came walking on the water, Peter asked to come to Him, and Jesus said one word: “Come.” Then “when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus” (Matthew 14:29). When Peter took his eyes off Jesus and looked at the wind and waves, he began to sink. Even then, Jesus “immediately stretched forth his hand, and caught him” (Matthew 14:31).
Faith-filled people are willing to step out of the boat when Jesus calls. They won’t always do it perfectly, and sometimes they’ll start to sink, but they keep their eyes on Him. A people of faith attempts things for God that can only succeed if He shows up, and in doing that, they give “glory to God.”
Reflect: Is there a “boat” God is calling you to step out of? What promise of God do you need to be “fully persuaded” of right now?
Life Application: Find one area where you’ve been holding back because of fear or doubt, such as a calling, a conversation, a step of obedience, or a need. Write down one of God’s promises that speaks to it, and take one concrete step of faith in that area this week.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, when You say “Come,” give me the courage to step out. Keep my eyes on You and not on the wind and waves. Make me strong in faith and fully persuaded that You’ll do what You’ve promised. In Your name, Amen.
