The Heart’s Highest Aim

Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:6–10; John 8:28–29

Key Verse: “Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.” — 2 Corinthians 5:9

Everyone lives for something. Some live for approval, some for comfort, and others for success or security. The Apostle Paul named his one goal plainly: whatever happened, he wanted to be “accepted of him,” which means pleasing to the Lord. That aim shaped how he spent his time, how he handled hardship, and how he treated people.

Jesus showed us this kind of life perfectly. He said, “And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him” (John 8:29). At His baptism, before He had preached one sermon or done one miracle, the Father announced from heaven, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). Jesus wasn’t trying to earn the Father’s love. Because He was secure in that love, He lived to bring the Father joy.

That’s where pleasing God starts for us too. We don’t work for His acceptance. Through Christ we already have it. We want to please Him because we’ve been loved by Him. A congregation that pleases God doesn’t begin with programs or plans. It begins with people whose deepest desire is, “Lord, I want You to be pleased with my life.”

Reflect: Whose approval do you look for most? What would change this week if pleasing God were your highest aim?

Life Application: Before you make decisions today, big or small, stop and ask yourself, “Will this please the Lord?” Write 2 Corinthians 5:9 on a card and keep it somewhere you’ll see it often, like your mirror, your dashboard, or your phone screen.

Prayer: Father, thank You for accepting me through Jesus Christ. Make pleasing You the deepest desire of my heart. Let my words, my choices, and my attitudes bring You joy today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
