YOUR JOB IS BIGGER THAN YOUR JOB DESCRIPTION

Scripture:
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”
— Matthew 5:14

Your employer probably gave you a job description.

It explains your responsibilities, expectations, and duties.

But if you're a follower of Jesus, you carry another assignment that probably isn't written anywhere in your employee handbook:
Be light.

Jesus said,
“Ye are the light of the world.”

Think about what light does.

Light changes the environment around it.

It doesn't have to announce itself.

It simply shines.

You may never stand behind a pulpit at work. You may never lead a Bible study in the break room. You may not have the opportunity to openly share your testimony every day.

But people can still see Christ through the way you live.

They notice how you respond when things go wrong.
They notice whether you participate in gossip.
They notice how you treat people who cannot do anything for you.
They notice whether your word can be trusted.
They notice how you respond when someone else receives the recognition you wanted.
They notice whether your faith affects your attitude.

Sometimes the loudest testimony in the workplace isn't something we say.

It's how we live.

God may have placed you where you are because someone around you needs to see what genuine faith looks like when it puts on work clothes.

Your workplace may contain people who will never walk through the doors of your church.

But every Monday morning, God sends the church through the doors of their workplace.

He sends you.

That means your job is bigger than your job description.

Yes, complete your responsibilities.

Yes, meet your deadlines.

Yes, do your work with excellence.

But don't forget the people around you while you're completing the tasks in front of you.

Someone may need encouragement.
Someone may need kindness.
Someone may need patience.
Someone may simply need to encounter a Christian whose life makes Jesus believable.

You don't have to force the light.

Just don't hide it.

LIFE APPLICATION TAKE-AWAY
Before asking God to change your workplace, ask Him how He wants to use you within your workplace.

Identify one person you regularly encounter at work and intentionally look for an opportunity this week to encourage, serve, or show kindness to them.

You never know what God may do through one small act of light.
