When God Sends a Storm

Scripture: Jonah 1:4–17
“But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea...” — Jonah 1:4

Jonah was sailing toward Tarshish when suddenly everything changed.

A violent storm arose.

But this was not an ordinary storm. Scripture specifically tells us, “the LORD sent out a great wind.” God loved Jonah too much to allow him to peacefully sail away from His will.

We often think every storm means something has gone wrong. Sometimes, however, God uses disruption to get our attention.
Jonah was so spiritually numb that while experienced sailors were terrified, he was asleep below deck. Eventually, Jonah recognized that his rebellion was connected to what was happening around him.

Then Jonah was thrown into the sea.

What happened next reveals the incredible mercy of God.

“The LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah.”

We often picture the fish as Jonah’s punishment. But think about it differently: without that fish, Jonah would have drowned.
The very thing that looked terrifying became God’s means of rescue.

Sometimes God allows circumstances into our lives that we would never choose because He sees dangers we cannot see. His correction is not evidence that He has stopped loving us. Scripture reminds us that the Lord disciplines those He loves.

If God is interrupting your direction, don’t immediately assume He is against you. Perhaps He is protecting you, correcting you, or redirecting you.

The storm may be uncomfortable, but God may be using it to bring you back to Him.

Today’s Truth:

Sometimes the storm that interrupts your plans is the mercy that redirects your life.

Prayer:
Lord, help me recognize Your hand even in difficult circumstances. When I wander, correct me. When I am going the wrong direction, redirect me. Give me a heart willing to listen when You speak. Amen.
