The Habit of Secret Prayer
Scripture: “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.” (Matthew 6:6)
Devotion: Public worship is vital, but private prayer forms the bedrock of a strong spiritual life. Jesus instructs His disciples not to seek applause in prayer but to commune sincerely with the Father in secret. True spiritual habit is not about performance but about intimacy with God.
When prayer becomes a daily discipline rather than a public display, we learn the joy of hidden fellowship with God. The closet may be literal or symbolic, but it represents a place of undistracted devotion where our hearts are bare before the Father. Such moments strengthen us to live faithfully in public.
Prayer:
Lord, draw me into the secret place. Let me long more for Your presence than for the approval of men. Teach me the habit of closing the door on distractions and opening my heart fully to You. In Christ’s name, Amen.
