The Discipline of Fasting
Scripture: Matthew 6:16-18
Devotional:
Fasting is one of the most misunderstood spiritual disciplines. Many see it as merely abstaining from food, but biblical fasting is much more than that. It is intentionally setting aside physical desires to focus more fully on God.
Fasting reminds us that our greatest need is not food, entertainment, comfort, or pleasure—it is God Himself. When we fast, we acknowledge our dependence upon Him.
Throughout Scripture, God's people fasted during times of repentance, crisis, guidance, and spiritual renewal. Moses fasted before receiving God's law. Esther called for a fast before approaching the king. Jesus fasted for forty days before beginning His public ministry.
Fasting exposes what controls us. When we remove something we depend upon, whether food, media, or another comfort, we often discover how attached we have become to it. The goal is not self-punishment but greater devotion.
This discipline teaches us to say no to temporary cravings so we can say yes to eternal priorities. Every hunger pang can become a reminder to pray. Every moment of sacrifice can become an opportunity to seek God's presence.
Fasting does not earn God's favor. Rather, it positions our hearts to receive what He desires to do in us.
Consider what God may be calling you to surrender for a season. As you create space in your life, allow Him to fill it with His presence and power.
Reflection Questions:
What comfort or habit might God be asking you to surrender temporarily?
How could fasting deepen your dependence on Him?
Prayer:
Father, teach me to hunger for You above everything else. Help me practice self-denial with the right motives and draw closer to You through it. Amen.
