WHEN YOUR HEART HURTS

Scripture: Psalm 34:18

"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."

Sometimes the hardest words to say are, "I'm hurting."

We become so accustomed to telling people we're fine that we sometimes convince ourselves we shouldn't feel sadness at all.

After all, aren't Christians supposed to be joyful? Aren't we supposed to trust God? Shouldn't strong faith keep us from feeling overwhelmed?

But nowhere does Scripture teach that following Jesus means we'll never experience sorrow.

In fact, one of the shortest and most powerful verses in the Bible is John 11:35: "Jesus wept."

Jesus stood outside the tomb of His friend Lazarus. He knew that He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead. He knew that death wouldn't have the final word in that situation.

And yet, Jesus wept.

Think about that.

Jesus knew the miracle was coming, but He still acknowledged the pain of the moment.

That tells us something important about sadness.

Feeling sorrow doesn't mean you've lost your faith. Sometimes it simply means you've experienced a loss, endured disappointment, or encountered something that has deeply affected your heart.

God doesn't ask us to pretend those experiences don't hurt.

Instead, He invites us to bring our brokenness to Him.

Psalm 34:18 doesn't say the Lord is near only to those who have everything together. It says He is near to the brokenhearted.

Perhaps you're grieving the loss of someone you love. Maybe you're disappointed by a relationship that didn't turn out as expected. Maybe you're carrying a private hurt that nobody else even knows exists.

Whatever the source of your sadness, remember this: God is not intimidated by your tears.

You don't have to hide them from Him. You don't have to manufacture a smile before approaching His throne.

You can come just as you are.

And while God doesn't always remove our sorrow immediately, He promises His presence in the middle of it.

Sometimes healing begins not when the pain disappears, but when we recognize that we no longer have to carry it alone.

There's also something beautiful God can develop through our painful experiences. Second Corinthians 1:4 reminds us that God comforts us in our troubles so that we can comfort others.

The pain you experience today may one day help you recognize the hurting heart of someone else.

God never wastes an opportunity to extend His grace.

Life Application: Sadness isn't a sign of spiritual failure. Bring your broken heart to God, trust Him with what you cannot understand, and allow His comfort to strengthen you one day at a time.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You know the hurts I carry, even the ones I struggle to express. Thank You for being near when my heart is broken. Help me trust Your presence when I cannot understand my circumstances. Use even my difficult seasons to deepen my faith and make me more compassionate toward others. In Jesus' name, Amen.
