WHEN HURT TURNS INTO A STRONGHOLD
Scripture: Ephesians 4:26–32
Being hurt is part of living in a broken world. People disappoint us, betray our trust, speak carelessly, and sometimes cause wounds that take years to heal.
The danger isn't simply that we experience hurt. The danger comes when we allow that hurt to establish a permanent residence in our hearts.
Paul warns believers not to allow anger to become an opportunity for the devil. He later instructs them to put away bitterness, wrath, anger, and malice.
Why? Because unresolved resentment rarely remains contained.
What begins as anger toward one person can eventually influence how we treat everyone. We become suspicious of kindness, hesitant to trust, quick to assume the worst, and reluctant to open our hearts.
A wound that was caused by someone else begins shaping the person we are becoming.
Bitterness promises protection, but it often produces imprisonment. We convince ourselves that holding on to resentment somehow prevents us from being hurt again. Yet the person who wounded us may have moved on while we remain emotionally attached to what happened.
God calls us to something better.
Forgiveness does not mean declaring that what happened was acceptable. It does not eliminate appropriate boundaries, accountability, or consequences. Instead, forgiveness means surrendering our desire for personal revenge and refusing to allow another person's wrongdoing to govern our hearts.
Through Christ, we can choose not to let someone else's actions determine our spiritual condition.
Life Application: Examine whether a past hurt has begun influencing your attitude toward others. Ask God to help you confront the bitterness before it becomes a permanent stronghold.
Remember: The longer you hold on to bitterness, the more bitterness begins holding on to you.
