STOP LIVING FOR FRIDAY
Scripture:
“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
— Psalm 90:12
There's a familiar rhythm many people fall into.
Monday: I can't believe the weekend is over.
Tuesday: At least Monday is behind us.
Wednesday: Halfway there.
Thursday: Almost Friday.
Friday: Finally!
Then we enjoy Saturday, begin worrying about Monday on Sunday evening, and start the entire cycle again.
But there is a problem with constantly living for Friday.
We're wishing away most of our lives.
If we spend five days every week waiting for two days to arrive, we are treating an enormous portion of the life God has given us as something to endure rather than something to steward.
Psalm 90 contains a powerful prayer:
“Teach us to number our days.”
Not just our vacation days.
Not just Saturdays.
Not just holidays.
Our days.
Every one of them matters because every one of them is limited.
One day you will experience your final Monday.
There will be a final commute.
A final meeting.
A final conversation with certain coworkers.
A final opportunity to encourage someone you regularly see.
We simply don't know when those moments will occur.
That doesn't mean we shouldn't enjoy weekends. Rest is important. Time with family matters. Vacations are wonderful.
But rest should restore us for our purpose, not become the only part of life we believe is worth living.
God has purpose for your Monday.
God has purpose for your Tuesday.
God has purpose for the meeting you don't want to attend, the assignment you'd rather avoid, and the ordinary conversation you didn't realize mattered.
Maybe the goal shouldn't be to create a life we constantly need to escape.
Maybe the goal should be to recognize God's presence and purpose in the life we're already living.
Tomorrow morning, when the alarm sounds, remember:
You aren't simply beginning another workweek.
You're receiving another collection of days from God.
Don't just survive them.
Steward them.
Don't merely count down the days.
Make the days count.
LIFE APPLICATION:
Stop treating the workweek as the space between the life you enjoy. Your workweek is part of the life God has given you.
For the next five mornings, begin your day with this prayer:
“Lord, thank You for giving me another day. Help me not to waste it wishing for another one. Show me how to honor You, serve someone, and make today count.”
Because you weren't created merely to survive until Friday.
You were made for Monday.
